Gastric Banding Surgery Voorhees

About LAP-BAND® and REALIZE Band Surgery at Echelon Bariatrics

Dr. Manigat at Echelon Bariatrics in Voorhees, New Jersey performs gastric banding surgery, including LAP-BAND® and REALIZE™ band surgeries, for morbidly obese patients. Gastric banding surgeries restrict the amount of food one can eat by sealing off a portion of the stomach with an adjustable band. Since you are unable to eat as much in a sitting, you will lose weight and find it easier to maintain your weight once you have reached your goal. Good candidates for this surgery include those who are morbidly obese with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 and above. To find out whether you are a good candidate for gastric banding surgery, contact Echelon Bariatrics.

LAP-BAND® System

LAP-BAND® surgery is a popular gastric banding surgical procedure. Using laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Manigat implants an inflatable plastic tube filled with saline around a small section of the stomach. This new compartment receives and processes smaller amounts of food, making you feel full much sooner and allowing you to lose weight gradually and consistently.

The success rate of LAP-BAND® surgery is just one of its benefits. Since the procedure is less invasive compared to other forms of obesity surgery, your recovery time will be much quicker and you will face less risk of post-surgical infections and side effects. By simply injecting saline into the band through a special port implanted beneath your skin, Dr. Manigat can adjust the size of the compartment to fit your individual needs and weight loss goals. LAP-BAND® surgery can also be reversed if you suffer from adverse side effects, with no damage to your digestive tract.

What to Expect After LAP-BAND® Surgery

After LAP-BAND® surgery, you may experience some discomfort as your body adjusts to the band. During this time it is important to follow the specific dietary plan created by Echelon Bariatric to ease and promote healing throughout the recovery process. As you heal, you will be allowed to eat a wider range of foods.

Though considered one of the safest surgical weight-loss procedures, LAP-BAND® surgery does carry some risks, including:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Heartburn
  • Vomiting
  • Ulcers

Over time, it is also possible that the band may deflate, slip out of place, erode into the stomach, or enlarge over time. Though these risks and complications are rare, it is important to know that they may occur in some patients. Dr. Manigat will discuss the risks and benefits associated with the LAP-BAND® System prior to the procedure.

REALIZE™ Band

Similar to LAP-BAND® surgery, REALIZE™ Band surgery is a gastric band surgical procedure intended to assist clinically obese patients in losing weight. During the REALIZE™ Band surgery, the stomach is divided by a flexible, inflatable tube that creates a smaller chamber for food to enter. Dr. Manigat fills the tube with saline through a port implanted in the skin, which separates the new compartment from the rest of the stomach. REALIZE™ Band surgery allows the patient to lose weight gradually with the help of a comprehensive nutritional plan. The REALIZE™ Band procedure also includes access to clinical support via the Internet, where patients can learn to eat smaller portions throughout the day to ensure a healthy, well-balanced diet. The most significant difference between the REALIZE™ Band and LAP-BAND® System is that, with the former, Dr. Manigat is able to monitor your progress through the REALIZE mySuccess® Internet tool.

What to Expect After REALIZE™ Band Surgery

Complications and side effects with the REALIZE™ Band are similar to those with other gastric banding surgical procedures including LAP-BAND®. These complications can include band erosion, slippage, and leaking; inflammation of the esophagus or stomach; and infection at the port site. Though the REALIZE™ Band was created with your comfort in mind, there is a chance that you may experience some discomfort and side effects such as nausea, acid reflux, constipation, or diarrhea. Dr. Manigat will address any problems or concerns that you may have regarding the surgery during your consultation.

Gastric banding surgery is a safe and effective way to lose weight gradually. Both LAP-BAND® surgery and REALIZE™ Band surgery have proven successful in most patients. Unlike other types of weight loss surgery, the bands in both LAP-BAND® and REALIZE™ can be removed. Dr. Manigat has successfully completed LAP-BAND® surgery and REALIZE™ band surgery in many patients from the Voorhees, Cherry Hill, and South Jersey areas.
